Hyundai Motor has declared an immediate stop-sale and a worldwide recall for the 2026 Hyundai Palisade following a heartbreaking incident in Ohio, according to Reuters. On March 14, the automaker verified that sales of specific trims have been suspended in the United States, Canada, and South Korea due to a serious safety flaw in the vehicle’s power-folding seats. This recall comes after a tragic occurrence on March 7, when a two-year-old girl lost her life after being trapped by the SUV’s second- or third-row power seats.
Global Recall and Affected Units
The safety measure affects vehicles manufactured up to March 11, 2026. Initially concentrating on North America, the recall has broadened to encompass a substantial number of domestic units in South Korea.
Region | Estimated Affected Units
— | —
North America | ~74,965
South Korea | ~57,474
Total Global Units | ~132,439
The stop-sale directive specifically involves the Limited and Calligraphy trims, which feature the power-folding seat capability. Models equipped with manually operated lever seats are excluded from this recall.
Severe Safety Issue: “Jam Prevention” Deficiency
Hyundai determined that in certain scenarios, the second- and third-row electric seats of the Palisade may not recognize contact with an occupant or object. This malfunction of the “anti-pinch” or jam-prevention feature stops the seat from halting or reversing when it hits an obstruction, creating a significant entrapment danger for children and pets.
Hyundai’s Safety Initiatives and Solutions
Hyundai is collaborating with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to execute the following measures:
– Software Sensitivity Update: An over-the-air (OTA) update is scheduled for release by the end of March to enhance occupant detection sensitivity.
– Operational Restrictions: The upgraded system will limit the power seat folding feature, allowing operation only when the tailgate is open, ensuring better visibility for the operator.
– Rental Assistance: Owners who prefer not to use their vehicle until a permanent solution is in place can reach out to their local dealer for a complimentary rental car.
Official Statement from Hyundai
In a formal statement, a Hyundai spokesperson expressed:
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers. We will continue to do our best to enhance customer trust and satisfaction by thoroughly addressing all issues regarding customer safety as our foremost priority.”
Hyundai advises all owners to exercise utmost caution. Prior to activating any power seat functions, visually ensure that no individual or object is in the seat-folding area.
