The Z4 is poised to depart from BMW’s offerings, creating a prominent void that is unlikely to be addressed in the foreseeable future. By April, the last roadster will roll off the assembly line, with no direct successor anticipated. While BMW remains silent regarding forthcoming initiatives, there is a subtle optimism that the brand will keep generating enjoyable vehicles.
Joachim Post, in conversation with *Auto Motor und Sport*, highlighted that any forthcoming low-volume model must prove financially sound before moving forward. He mentioned that the rear-wheel-drive Z4, known as the “G29,” was launched at a strategic moment, reaping benefits from a collaboration with Toyota, which sells its own variant, the Supra.
Despite the continuous partnership on hydrogen fuel cell advancements, a new sports car is not on the agenda at this time. Nevertheless, BMW reassures fans that exhilarating vehicles are still forthcoming. Although a new Z4 or its direct successor is not immediate, the CTO suggested the possibility of exploring various types of performance cars:
“Our aim is to create vehicle projects that are both emotionally riveting and lucrative. We have a legacy of delivering products that offer the ultimate driving experience. While looking towards the future, we will persist in developing highly emotional vehicles. There may be exceptional models in new segments that we have yet to investigate.”
This news is promising, particularly with the Z4’s imminent phase-out and the M8 already discontinued. Thankfully, the M240i and M2 will stay within the lineup, with production of the “G42” and “G87” expected to carry on until mid-2029. The 4 Series and M4 are also expected to remain available through the end of the decade.
A brand-new dedicated performance model is improbable before 2030, as BMW is currently focused on integrating Neue Klasse technology and designs across approximately 40 models by the conclusion of 2027. Following that, the brand is anticipated to launch entry-level EVs, the i1 and i2, in addition to a robust SUV that will feature plug-in hybrid and fully electric options before the decade wraps up.
Looking ahead, the “new segments” referred to by the CTO remain ambiguous. There is speculation that they may encompass two-door models with coupe aesthetics. Additionally, Post might have alluded to electric M vehicles such as the M3 “ZA0” and X3 M “ZA5.” Previous reports have also suggested the possibility of an all-electric M3 Touring “ZA1” and a conceivable X4 M “ZA7.”
Whatever BMW M has in store, it is anticipated to be more enticing than the XM venture. Anything beyond yet another SUV would be a welcomed addition.
